How to Opt Out of Advertising Cookies
Ever wondered how you can opt out of advertising companies collecting your information?
With all the recent controversy about privacy, I felt it was important to write an article (and I’m sure many other people have done this over the years) about how to defeat the cookie monster.
One of the ways online advertising companies target you with specific adverts is by collecting information about what websites you have visited, where you are, and your personal details such as your IP address and operating system. There are several ways to opt out of advertising companies storing this info. If you are in Europe, head over to Your Online Choices; if you are in the U.S.A., head over to About Ads. These websites are run by the ‘Advertising Watchdog’, the EDAA and the DAA. Alternatively, you can do it directly on your browser: IE, Chrome, Firefox, Edge.
Cookies are now a very big part of our lives. Even if we use AdBlock, it doesn’t always stop cookies from storing information about your computer. However, the one thing I will say is that it’s not the big companies who get affected when you block their ads; it’s the little ones – small blogs, small websites. In the end, our own dear reddit was once one of these sites and, as they say, “unless anybody has a better idea, advertising is going to remain reddit’s primary means of support.”
